For years, Siri felt more like a basic voice-controlled utility than a genuinely intelligent assistant. Setting alarms, starting timers, making calls, or checking the weather were useful, but more complicated questions often pushed me toward other AI tools.

With iOS 27, that experience appears to be changing.

Apple has put its redesigned Siri at the center of the update, giving the assistant stronger AI capabilities, better awareness of what is happening on your screen, and deeper access to information across apps. Alongside Siri, iOS 27 introduces several smaller improvements that could make everyday iPhone use noticeably easier.

Siri Gets the AI Upgrade It Needed

The new Siri can handle more complicated questions and multi-step instructions instead of requiring users to break everything into individual commands.

For example, you can ask Siri to research useful iOS features and organize the findings into a note. It can also draft messages and send them to contacts.

More importantly, Siri can understand information from your files, emails, and messages. You could ask it to locate a conversation about a recent delivery and then help prepare a return message based on that information.

That moves Siri much closer to becoming a personal AI assistant rather than simply a voice interface.

On-Screen Awareness Changes Everything

One of Siri’s most useful improvements is its ability to understand what’s currently displayed on your iPhone.

Imagine viewing the lineup for a football match and asking Siri which player on the screen is the oldest. Or while browsing a startup’s website, you could ask about the company’s funding history or competitors without manually copying the company name into another app.

Siri can also work with information visible through the Camera app.

Point your camera at an unfamiliar drink, product, restaurant sign, or bag of coffee beans, and Siri can use that visual context to answer questions. You could even photograph coffee packaging and ask for recommendations on how to brew it.

iOS 27 also introduces a dedicated Siri AI app where previous conversations can be revisited.

Apple Intelligence Expands Across iOS

Siri isn’t the only area receiving an AI upgrade.

Apple Intelligence now makes creating Shortcuts and automations considerably easier. Instead of manually building a complicated workflow, users can describe what they want in natural language.

You might say, “Show my tasks every morning at 8,” or ask the system to convert selected photos into JPEG files and share them through AirDrop.

Safari also gains custom alerts capable of monitoring changes to webpages, including product prices, blogs, and privacy policies.

Meanwhile, Photos receives improved editing functionality, including tools for reframing and extending images. Apple’s object-removal capabilities have also been refined to produce cleaner results.

The Passwords app takes automation further by supporting automatic password changes on compatible websites.

Small Improvements That Make a Big Difference

Not everything impressive about iOS 27 involves AI.

A redesigned clipboard experience makes moving text, links, photos, and videos between apps easier. When content has been copied, contextual paste controls can appear directly around the keyboard, reducing the friction of switching between applications.

Apple has also responded to criticism surrounding its Liquid Glass interface by providing granular transparency controls.

Another practical addition is intelligent network switching. When a Wi-Fi connection becomes unreliable, the iPhone can automatically move to mobile data, helping maintain connectivity during important tasks.

Apple Strengthens Child Safety Features

iOS 27 also expands parental controls and child-safety protections.

Parents can configure different schedules and usage limits depending on the day, receive notifications when children attempt to access new websites, and remotely approve access.

The system can also display warnings when potentially nude content appears across supported communication experiences such as Messages and FaceTime.

Siri Could Finally Become Part of Everyday iPhone Use

iOS 27 may not be packed with dramatic visual changes, but its biggest achievement could be transforming how people interact with their iPhones.

For years, users looking for sophisticated AI answers often jumped directly to tools such as ChatGPT or Gemini. Apple’s challenge is convincing them that Siri can handle more of those interactions without requiring them to leave what they’re already doing.

With contextual understanding, camera intelligence, multi-step commands, app integration, and deeper Apple Intelligence features, Siri is becoming significantly more useful.

After years of being an assistant many people largely ignored, iOS 27 may finally give iPhone users a reason to start talking to Siri again.
