OpenAI’s latest product announcements suggest that ChatGPT is evolving beyond a conventional AI chatbot. The company is building an ecosystem where users can discover software, connect services, and complete tasks without necessarily leaving the ChatGPT interface.
The bigger idea emerging from OpenAI’s recent Dev Day announcements is a shift in how people interact with applications. Instead of searching for an app, installing it, opening it, and learning how to use it, users could increasingly describe what they want to accomplish and let ChatGPT determine which tools can help.
ChatGPT Becomes an App Discovery Layer
OpenAI says ChatGPT now reaches around 1.2 billion weekly users, giving the platform a potentially enormous audience for software developers.
Under the new approach, ChatGPT can recommend applications during a conversation when it determines that a particular service could help complete a task. Users can then connect that application and interact with it directly through ChatGPT.
OpenAI is also expanding its plugin architecture with more interactive, app-like experiences. Developers can create interfaces that appear inside conversations, allowing users to perform tasks without switching between ChatGPT and separate websites or applications.
For developers, this creates another distribution channel. Instead of relying exclusively on search engines, websites, desktop software, or mobile app stores, companies can build experiences designed specifically for AI-driven interactions.
Your ChatGPT Identity Can Follow You
Another important part of the strategy is Sign in with ChatGPT.
The feature allows users to carry their ChatGPT identity into participating third-party applications. It also provides a mechanism for users to access their existing AI allowance when using supported services.
OpenAI launched the feature with partners including Cognition’s Devin, Notion, Vercel, T3, OpenClaw, and Dactyl, with additional partners expected to join.
The company demonstrated how this model could work with productivity and creative applications. Meeting tools could access calendars and assist with notes and follow-up tasks, while services such as Figma and Adobe could allow users to work on projects through ChatGPT.
A Marketplace for Enterprise Software
OpenAI is also expanding this model into the business world with a new enterprise marketplace.
The marketplace launched with more than 30 partners, including companies such as Adobe, Figma, HubSpot, Salesforce, ServiceNow, CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, Harvey, and others.
For eligible customers, approved partner software can potentially be purchased using part of an existing OpenAI commitment. This gives enterprise software providers another route to reach organizations already investing heavily in OpenAI’s ecosystem.
OpenAI is also improving its application review process. Developers will have greater visibility into reviews, can identify required changes, request human review, and update individual tools without restarting the entire submission process.
AI Agents Could Change How Apps Are Used
The biggest change may come from OpenAI’s growing focus on autonomous AI agents.
Its new Dots agents are designed to perform tasks using their own cloud-based computers and browsers. They can also work with connected applications.
This changes the traditional software workflow. Instead of deciding which application to open for a particular task, a user could simply explain the desired outcome. The agent can determine which connected services or tools are needed to complete the work.
OpenAI says Dots can connect with more than 4,000 applications. They can also perform proactive research in the background, although users remain responsible for approving actions.
The App Store Model May Be Entering a New Phase
OpenAI has not announced a complete replacement for traditional app-store billing or revenue-sharing systems. Instead, its current strategy focuses on discovery, distribution, identity, and in-chat software experiences.
That distinction matters.
If users increasingly find and use software through AI conversations rather than traditional app stores, ChatGPT could become an important gateway between customers and applications.
The result could be a software ecosystem where users search less for individual apps and increasingly ask AI systems to select and operate the tools needed to accomplish a goal.
