Disney Names Character.AI’s Former CEO as Its First CTO

The Walt Disney Company is making a significant move into its next phase of technology strategy by appointing Karandeep Anand as its first-ever Chief Technology Officer. Anand, who most recently served as CEO of Character.AI, will join Disney as Senior Executive Vice President and CTO on October 2, 2026.

The appointment is notable because Character.AI previously faced a copyright dispute with Disney. In September 2025, Disney sent Character.AI a cease-and-desist letter alleging that its platform was hosting AI versions of Disney characters without authorization.

Now, less than a year later, a former leader of that AI company is moving directly into Disney’s technology leadership.

From Character.AI to Disney

Anand has extensive experience across AI, consumer technology, infrastructure, and product development. Before joining Character.AI, he held leadership positions at Meta and spent 15 years at Microsoft, including work connected to the Azure platform. Disney says his background combines infrastructure, consumer technology, and AI expertise.

At Character.AI, Anand became CEO in May 2025 after previously serving as a board adviser. The company operates a generative AI platform where users can create and interact with virtual characters.

His move to Disney highlights how quickly experienced AI executives are becoming valuable to traditional media and entertainment companies.

Why Disney Created the CTO Role

Disney has created the CTO position as the company looks to strengthen its technology capabilities across its businesses.

According to Disney, Anand will oversee enterprise technology, infrastructure, data and AI platforms, product, and engineering. He will also work with technology teams across Disney’s different business segments.

The company says the role will support efforts to modernize how Disney develops and delivers technology across the organization.

Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro has also emphasized technology as part of the company’s broader strategy, with Disney+ positioned as an important digital connection between the company and its customers.

An Unusual Connection to AI and Copyright

The appointment also brings renewed attention to the complicated relationship between generative AI companies and major entertainment brands.

Character.AI’s platform allows users to create AI-powered characters and have conversations with them. Disney previously alleged that the service hosted chatbot versions of copyrighted characters from its franchises. Character.AI subsequently removed Disney characters as chatbot options, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The situation illustrates a broader challenge for entertainment companies. AI platforms can create new ways for audiences to interact with fictional characters, but those capabilities also raise questions around intellectual property, licensing, ownership, and control.

Disney’s decision to bring an AI executive into its senior leadership team shows that the company is now focusing not only on protecting its intellectual property but also on understanding and building with emerging technologies.

Character.AI Team Members Are Also Expected to Join

Disney said that a number of Character.AI’s technical team members are expected to join Disney alongside Anand.

This could give Disney additional AI and engineering expertise as it develops its technology strategy.

Rather than treating AI solely as an external technology, the company appears to be strengthening its internal capabilities around AI platforms, data, infrastructure, and product development.

What This Could Mean for Entertainment Technology

The appointment comes as entertainment companies increasingly explore AI-powered products and experiences.

For Disney, the potential applications are broad. AI could influence areas such as personalized digital experiences, interactive entertainment, content workflows, customer engagement, data analysis, and new ways for audiences to interact with Disney’s characters and franchises.

However, Disney has not announced a specific AI product roadmap tied to Anand’s appointment.

For now, his mandate is broader: modernizing the company’s technology infrastructure and coordinating technology development across Disney’s businesses.

A Sign of the Changing AI Talent Market

Anand’s appointment also reflects a broader shift in the technology industry.

AI expertise is increasingly moving beyond standalone AI startups and major technology companies into traditional industries. Media, entertainment, healthcare, finance, manufacturing, and retail companies are all seeking leaders who can connect AI capabilities with existing business operations.

Disney’s first CTO role places that transition directly inside one of the world’s largest entertainment companies.

The unusual history between Disney and Character.AI makes the appointment particularly interesting, but the larger story is about how traditional enterprises are adapting to an AI-driven technology environment.

As Disney expands its technology leadership, the coming months could reveal how the company plans to combine its entertainment ecosystem with AI, data, infrastructure, and digital products.
